Editor’s note: Oof. This was/is quite a digital bloodbath on Sina Weibo. A little background: Korn, for the unintiated, is an American nu metal which achieved mainstream fame in the late 1990s on the albums Follow the Leader and Issues. Han Geng (韩庚) was the only Chinese-born member of K-pop boy band Super Junior. Last week, video portal LeTV posted a rumor to Sina Weibo saying that Han Geng was “opening” for Korn during Shanghai Sonic. Then the sh-t the fan.
For the rest of the story, we turn it over to intrepid Radar correspondent Jin:
So basically when Korn fans heard about the rumor they went nuts and threaten to harm/rape/kill Han Geng fans at the show, told them to stay the f*** away from the stage because there will be circle pit/wall of death and stuff which Pop music fans obviously have never experienced before… then Han Geng fans went on a huge fight with them online, their arguments are basically focused on the insults and threats, loads of them made comments like: “I’ve never heard of Korn, [and] neither have your parents.” Which made the situation even worse.
LeTV deleted that post and later made this announcement, which more or less says they didn’t mean to spread the rumor, are glad to see the diversity among Chinese music fans, and fully support Shanghai Sonic.
Then someone posted an open letter to both Korn and Han Geng fans which has been forwarded over 3000 times, titled To All the Foolish Rock Fans, Does Listening to Rock Music Make You More Superior?
The schedule is out now, they are not playing one after the other. However, the fight rages on, Korn and Han Geng fans against each other, against LeTV for spreading the rumor, against the promoter for being unprofessional (Ed.: why?), etc., etc…. so much hate!
