It’s getting hot in Shanghai. The last few days have ushered in that close, oppressive heat that characterises the middle of the year in Central and Southern China. It was with this in mind that we disregarded Emma Ticketmaster’s proposal to do a festival first at Shanghai’s F1 track and subsequently at the Shanghai stadium in August.
We’ve just received information about a wholly more sensible offering, albeit late in the game. Apparently, the JinShan town council are trying to do a Zhenjiang and are underwriting a summer beach festival, the Crazy Summer Music Festival. Slated for 3 days across 17,18,19 July, this ambitious looking undertaking will feature Asian and Chinese pop stars (of course, the literature namechecks a host of stars, but prefaces this with “invited artist include”) including Fan Yi Chen, Cheer Chen and Sodagreen. Further, they will have a hip hop and electronica day on the second stage, featuring lots of local talent. They also have some international bits and pieces with Solarstone repping trance, and some other people we haven’t heard of from the UK and the Netherlands.
Honestly, we think that it’s all a bit late to be launching something that the organisers anticipate will be attended by 150,000 – 300,000 people. They also promise to reach up to 16m people via the media, but again, this event is in under 6 weeks, so we doubt it. But, it promises to be another interesting development in China’s short festival life.
You can buy tickets here and you that’s the only reference we can find for it. We also wonder who would swim in the sea mere kilometres from the mouth of the Yangtze.
