We are aware of the underground – there are lots of scenes that gently bubble under the surfaces of major cities around the world. There have been trance parties fairly consistently through the years here in Shanghai, but we didn’t know it had become this big.
Next weekend, 12/13 November, a group of Chinese Dutch trance lovers are bringing the (expensive) rave to Shanghai. They are taking over the Shanghai Everbright Conference Centre for two nights of pulsating euro trance. Organizers are expecting 5,000 people a night at the staggering ticket price of 380RMB. Admittedly, a couple of the DJ’s are pretty well known in trance circles (Marco V, Cosmic Gate), but this kind of thing has no precedence in China to date.

We admire the guts it takes to put on something like this – it really is a mammoth commitment and we imagine quite costly. The fly in the proverbial ointment is a worrying lack of promotion. We had to dig hard with our head researcher to find a couple brief mentions of it in English – one on Cosmic Gate’s website, the other on Myspace HERE. All we could find in Chinese was the ticketing info and a BBS post.
